People of The Year 2020: Zaylie Ledermann

Updated: Mar 19, 2021

Zaylie Ledermann is currently a junior at the Curtis L. Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. She is majoring in Supply Chain and Operations Management and minoring in Environmental Science, Policy, and Management as well as Corporate Environmental Management. Zaylie is the next person we announce in the Top 10 People of The Year 2020.

ZAYLIE LEDERMANN’S PROFILE:

Vice President of Vocal A Cappella - University of Minnesota

Vice President of Net Impact - University of Minnesota

Teaching Assistant at University of Minnesota

Student Sustainability Assistant at University of Minnesota

Regarding her experience at Vocal U A Cappella, Zaylie shares that she appreciates the time and the opportunity working as a leader of the community she cares about. “I really love the leadership position in that group because I love it and I want to help the group reach our full potential,” Zaylie said, “We have a lot of fun like a little family.” Interestingly, Zaylie tells us that her Vice President role requires more management work than the professional knowledge about music. She is responsible for organizing the group, ensuring that the group is reaching its full potential in performances, building their reputations, and keeping the community supportive. Besides working as a Vice President, Zaylie participates in group’s performances such as arranging the songs and performing as a vocalist and a soloist.

When asked about characteristics that have contributed to who she is today, Zaylie tells us that she values empathy the most. “Being empathetic is really important,” she remarked. As a leader, she regards being understanding of other perspectives before judging as necessary. Moreover, Zaylie embraces personalities of being genuine and humorous, especially to herself. As growing up, Zaylie realizes it is tiring to live up to others’ opinions and pretend to be who she is not, so she chooses to stay true to herself. In that way, Zaylie can consider herself as a best friend, whom she feels comfortable to rely on most of the time.

One of the changes Zaylie hopes to see in the community in the coming year is that people would be able to be more open-minded and willing to listen to different perspectives as “a lot of divisions are because people are not willing to hear others’ sides out.” She wishes everyone could take a step back to look at the big picture of culture, politics, and religion to realize that they are not that different, so that they can at least give each other some respect.

We are grateful for Zaylie’s contributions to our campus. Her involvement in both artistic and major activities is inspiring and interesting. She sets a good example of being a leader, a dream chaser and an excellent student. I hope she will be happy with her decisions and journey wherever she is.

Please stay tuned for the full article of Zaylie Ledermann and don’t forget to send her congratulations!
