People of The Year 2020: Munira Ahmed

Munira Ahmed is currently a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Individualized Studies at the University of Minnesota. Acknowledged for her contributions; we are so proud to announce her as the seventh person on the list of People of The Year 2020.

As a hard-working and busy student, Munira shares that a balanced mental health is important to her. To keep her positive energy and manage her stress level, Munira maintains the habit of journaling. “I am someone that thinks a lot and sometimes my thoughts are just overwhelmed and I need to write it down,” she shares. Besides that, journaling helps Munira with self-reflection, allowing her to grow, see what she can do better, or what she should improve. It also makes her less judgmental and tolerant towards others’ flaws by giving herself a chance to think through the problems.

Moreover, when asked about her experience as the Vice President of African Student Association, Munira shares excitedly: “It shapes me a lot. It helps me to know what it's like to work with others and plan events.” In addition, the time at African Student Association allows her to learn how to approach an issue and to be more adaptable. The pandemic has challenged the organization, but she grows from experience, especially in the way she works with other board members in such a difficult setting.

Coming to 2021, Munira is looking forward to a new start and excited to learn and grow. “This year is more about change for myself, especially my energy. I have been more self-aware, learning to create boundaries with others, and taking more time for myself. I am just ready to accomplish more and learn new things.”

In Munira, we see a talented leader, a diligent student, and a strong, adventurous woman with a kind heart. She inspires us to take the courage to challenge ourselves, to learn more, and to be the voice for the issues in our society. We are more than honored to have Munira on our campus and we hope she will be successful in her life.
